News and Updates at River Valley BHWC
Women's History Month Women’s History Month, celebrated every March, is a time to honor the contributions, achievements, and resilience of women throughout history. It recognizes the trailblazers who have shaped
society in politics, science, arts, education, and activism, often overcoming significant barriers to do so. The month serves as both a celebration and a call to action, highlighting the progress made toward gender equality while acknowledging the work still needed. It is an opportunity to amplify women’s voices, share their stories, and inspire future generations to continue advocating for inclusivity, empowerment, and equal opportunities for all.

Book of the Month: "Collective Wisdom" by Grace Bonney
In this rich and multilayered collection of interviews, conversations, and intimate photographs, over 100 trailblazing women describe the ups, downs, and lessons learned while forging their unique paths. Collective Wisdom celebrates the stories of those who have been there and know the road—from an Olympic athlete and a NASA team member to
award-winning artists, activists, writers, and filmmakers, from women in their fifties to centenarians. It is also a tribute to the importance of intergenerational connections between women, with interviews conducted by daughters, friends, mentors, and colleagues. Collective Wisdom creates a living, breathing sense of community—a space where all of us can gather, listen, share, and learn.
Video of the Month: "Maiden"
Maiden is the story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook in charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World in 1989. Tracy’s inspirational dream was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her
failure, and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity.
